Some sequels get announced and vanish. This one was the ghost story of anime for over a decade. Now it has a date.

## The date Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising opens August 28 in Japan. It's the direct sequel to 2013's "Rebellion," and it landed a confirmed theatrical date only after years of production delays that had fans wondering if it would ever really come.

## Why Madoka matters Madoka Magica looked like a cute magical-girl show and then flipped the whole genre inside out, turning it dark, tragic, and philosophical in a way nobody saw coming. It reset expectations for what the format could carry. "Rebellion" ended on a gut-punch of a note, and this film is the answer to a cliffhanger people have argued about for thirteen years.
