Anime lead, and it's a legend coming back. The new Ghost in the Shell — a full reboot from Science SARU — premiered worldwide on Prime Video on July 7, and it's already climbing the charts.
For anybody who cares about cyberpunk, this is the source. The 1995 film shaped a whole aesthetic. A fresh take is a big deal.
The studio behind it
Science SARU is the house behind Dandadan and Ping Pong the Animation — a studio with a real visual identity, not a factory. Director Mokochan makes their anime debut here, with the pedigree of a team known for taking swings. That's the right kind of energy for a property this iconic.
What it's actually about
The series is set in 2029 and follows Major Motoko Kusanagi — a full-body cyborg — and the Public Security Section 9 team as they hunt the AI known as the Puppet Master. It's the core Ghost in the Shell premise: identity, consciousness, and what's left of 'you' when the body is machine. Ten episodes, dropping weekly instead of all at once.
Why it's connecting
It defied the odds to become one of Prime Video's most popular series out the gate — early word on the first episode has been strong. A weekly release keeps the conversation alive, which is exactly how a slow-burn cyberpunk story should roll out. The classic still has pull.
