Host lane means single-player RPGs, and few carry the weight of this one. Final Fantasy X turns 25, and Square Enix is marking it by bringing the FFX/X-2 HD Remaster to Nintendo Switch 2 — digital on July 23, with a physical edition following August 27.
FFX first hit PS2 in 2001. A quarter century later, it's still the game a lot of people name when they name the best RPG ever made.
Why FFX still holds up
This is the entry that pushed the series into full voice acting and cinematic storytelling. The Sphere Grid, the turn-based combat, and a story about Tidus and Yuna that people still get emotional about — it landed at exactly the right moment and never really faded. A remaster on new hardware just makes it easy to hand to a new player.
The Switch 2 fit
Putting a 60-plus-hour single-player RPG on a portable is the whole pitch. FFX is built for long, focused runs, and being able to play it handheld or docked is how a lot of people prefer to sink into a game like this. The anniversary timing — FFX hit 25 on July 19 — makes it a moment, not just a re-release.
Where it lands for us
In a July stacked with remakes, a proper JRPG landmark coming to the newest Nintendo box is a clean host-lane pick. Story-first, big world, single-player through and through. If you never played it, this is your on-ramp.
