Edgerunners was supposed to be a one-off. Instead it became the most durable thing in the whole Cyberpunk universe — and this month it shows up somewhere new.
The crossover
Wuthering Waves, the free-to-play open-world action RPG, is collaborating with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, with the tie-in kicking off in June 2026. A gritty Night City anime dropping into a high-fantasy gacha world sounds like a clash on paper; in practice it's how anime properties travel now — through the games where the audience already lives.
Why Edgerunners won't die
The series is the spin-off that did what the game's launch couldn't: it made people fall in love with Night City. Studio Trigger's animation plus a story that actually stuck the landing turned Edgerunners into the franchise's emotional core. CD Projekt RED noticed — there's a second Edgerunners season in production.
Anime and games are one market now
This is the through-line we keep covering: anime, games, and the culture around them aren't separate aisles. An anime built off a video game crosses over into a different video game, and nobody blinks. The fans buying the Edgerunners drop are the same fans grinding Wuthering Waves. Two "industries," one audience.
What to watch
If you bounced off Cyberpunk 2077 at launch, Edgerunners is still the easiest way in — ten episodes, no homework. Then the Wuthering Waves event is a low-stakes way to see the world in motion. Season two is the real prize on the horizon.
