Every week we point at a different corner of battle rap that the mainstream skips. This week it's a league a fighter built for himself when he decided he'd rather own the stage than just stand on somebody else's.
## Who runs it Bullpen Battle League is founded and run by John John Da Don — born Jonathan McGee, a veteran battler out of Yonkers now based in Atlanta. In the ring they call him the Giant Killer, one of the more strategically respected pens the sport has produced. Off the mic, he turned that reputation into a business: his own league, under his own ShrugLife Network banner.
## Why it matters that he owns it That's the part worth sitting with. This isn't a battler waiting for a bigger league to book him. He built the platform, the cards, and the pipeline that puts other fighters on. Bullpen is Black-owned, operated out of Atlanta, and now runs as one of the fastest-growing leagues in the culture. Ownership is the whole point — the person who takes the shots also signs the checks.
## Where it sits in the scene Battle rap runs on rooms like this. URL and RBE get the mainstream shine, but the sport's real depth is in the independent leagues that give the South, the Midwest and the underground their own stages. Bullpen sits in that lane — Atlanta-built, battler-owned, feeding clips and matchups that travel across X long after the night ends.
## The through-line The women had Queen of the Ring. The Midwest built Black Ice Cartel. iBattleTV stacked over a decade of cards. Bullpen is the one a legend built with his own name on the door. Different rooms, same lesson we keep coming back to: the culture stands on infrastructure the people in it built themselves.
If your battle-rap map stops at the two biggest leagues, you're missing the fighters who went and built their own. Bullpen is one of them.
