If you make beats, the sampler is the engine. Bitwig just swapped theirs out for something a lot more dangerous.
What dropped
Bitwig Studio 6.1 entered public beta on June 18, 2026, and the headline is a "radically updated Sampler." It's free for anyone with an active Upgrade Plan, with the full release planned for the summer. Bitwig has always been a power-user DAW; this update aims straight at producers who chop.
The two new play modes
The Sampler now has Spectral, which time-stretches audio through spectral analysis, and Fragments, a granular mode that breaks a sample into micro-grains. In plain terms: you can stretch a loop way past where it used to fall apart, and you can blur a one-shot into texture and pads without leaving the device. That's sound design and chopping in the same window.
Slicing and auto-detection
There's a new slicing function that works across every play mode, plus automatic tempo and pitch detection baked in. Drag a loop in, let it map the slices, and start playing it back across the pads. The workflow that used to take three plugins now lives in one.
Why it matters for the beat business
Tools like this lower the floor and raise the ceiling at the same time. A new producer can get usable chops fast; a veteran can push a sample somewhere it's never been. For anybody building a catalog to sell — same lane we're in with the beat vault — faster sound design means more finished records. That's the whole game.
